LEGO DC Super-Villains Review

"The Bad Guys?"


LEGO DC Super-Villains is the latest entry in the now very long running brick building series. This time around things have changed as you're no longer playing as the good guys. To start, you're able to build your very own villain. There are honestly too many options for customization and I was blown away by how many things you could tweak. From your abilities' particle effects to wearing a hot dog outfit, the game truly has it all. I probably spent about ten or twenty minutes fiddling around with this, there's a lot of depth.

From there you work through a prison break out as this type of event is something that's rather common in this game and that's where things go wrong. The Justice League comes to save the day, but a third party arrives and sends them away via a portal. This new Syndicate crew is pretending to be the very team they've vanished, with some hidden motivations.

There are a large number of levels to work through with this campaign featuring a mix of long and many short missions. Some are just bridging points together and there's a lot to do. There are also really short missions to play afterwards and of course a large hub to explore. This hub area consists of multiple major DC areas such as Metropolis or Gotham City. They're sort of winding, and honestly not the best layout they've built with this concept. There are many missions here, events and races if that's your sort of thing.


LEGO DC Super-Villains carries the traditional mechanics with refined icons for the experience. There really aren't too many new tweaks this time around, it should feel familiar. There's the drop-in/drop-out coop play and a focus on puzzles. You're collecting studs from breaking items to buy things such as characters or scavenging the worlds for secrets to grab collectibles.

The powers are great here, but they do feel as though they're just taken from the Marvel characters and adjusted to the DC offerings. The worlds are vast in this, while also being detailed. I was surprised by the performance as I didn't have any issues and I belive this is the first time I've had zero problems in a playthrough of a LEGO game. There's a large roster to play as whether you like the villains or the heroes which are sprinkled throughout the narrative. The game is also Xbox One X enhanced with an improved resolution and HDR support.

The Conclusion

LEGO DC Super-Villains is another fine LEGO game, featuring a decent story and lots of content. It doesn't really do anything too new with the formula and it was just alright to playthrough. There are many levels to work through and tons of content across the large hub world. I wasn't sure who a lot of the cast was as they seemed to pull out some obscure DC characters to stack the roster.

The plot was generally fine, not knowing some of the big bad characters didn't help and the whole alternative cast was a tad odd yet fun to see. The game performance was great, visually it was solid and I didn't have any problems show up which I believe is a first for this series. It's fine and if you've played the past titles it'll be another excellent addition to the collection. Speaking of collections, there's a lot to find within the world to fill that collectibles desire and coop is once again enjoyable.
