The Pokemon Go Tour: Johto in 2022 was a rather interesting one day event which took place on February 26th. It follows in the footsteps of similar yearly events which include the likes of the Go Fest event which is typically the big one and recently the Safari Zone. These are special limited time moments where trainers across the experience can opt into a special day of wild goals and crazy catching.
You can go in for a free type of setup, or upgrade to a ticketed option which will grant more opportunities within the game. I thoroughly suggest opting for the ticket choices as you do get quite a bit of value from what your goals are and it continues to just be a fun thing to do. I spent quite a number of hours out there working on catching Pokemon and finishing as many of the challenges as I could.
This year was a tad different however since it was chilly, so I went to our decently busy mall location which provided adequate distance travel and pokestops. That being Crossiron just outside of Calgary for reference, in case that factors in for whatever reason. The event was set from 9am to 9pm in the local time, or well any local time where the event took place across the globe.
There were also some pre-challenges to do if you grabbed your ticket early so keep that in mind if you’re looking at doing future events in the year to come. With tour Johto I feel they’re really starting to hit that sweet spot for activities to do and Pokemon to catch. I almost felt overwhelmed initially since so many challenges were present across the special limited tab, the dailies and also a special permanent challenge.
It didn’t take long to get used to things and I appreciated the options being there from the start so I could progress everything at once instead of slowly having to move through various challenges. With the rotating hours of unique Pokemon there were punchcards to match and then at the end of the day it was a frenzy of random creatures. I personally had some issues finding a couple critters here or there, so more diversity sneaking in during those hourly portions might have been good to have.
I didn’t think anything was too hard to work towards over the few hours plus I spent playing, outside of the evolving challenge which was just too much for me. So in general there was a ton to do and work towards. I was a tad disappointed by the shiny rate, I had anticipated that to be higher. I only gathered three shiny Pokemon from the event despite hours of play. One of them I already had prior so it was two new shiny catches.
The rate per hour could have been better, my companion on this adventure had the same catch rate. I did however get a cherished shiny I’ve been after for years, welcome to the crew my fiery red Gyarados! So that was cool to finally get. Raids were also more present, with a few options that were mostly similar throughout. I also got a new legendary Pokemon from a raid so that which was nice. It was also great to see others out and about collecting, that always adds to the fun.
I do believe some sort of flying trainer aspect might have been glitched, couldn’t seem to trigger that to happen. I liked the concept of there being a theme for Gold and Silver, I opted for the former. My companion chose Silver. I would have liked there to be a deeper quest line there, similar to Pokemon Go Fest’s rockstar theme. This choice seemed rather minimal quite honestly. So in general, I appreciated the quantity of things that were available despite it initially feeling overwhelming it filled my day with goals which I like.
The shiny rate wasn’t great, actually somewhat disappointing. I think they’re going the right way with how much you have to do, with some fine tuning adjustment I imagine a perfect event is on the horizon for now it was generally enjoyable and a worthwhile time to me. I look forward to the next event. With that, there’s a spots to catch guide below, and the Pokemon Go hub for further game coverage.
