This is a coop focused take on The Last Kids on Earth which is a book series and also a Netflix Original Series. This game appears to largely be based on the show and has the voice actors come in to lend their voices. That being the core characters, not the extended monsters. In the game you play as any of the four main characters, with the option for local coop.

If you go for local cooperative play keep in mind that each person must take a particular character on without the option to duplicate characters. The story is a few hours long or so, with a number of extra side quests and open world activities to take part in.

The open world aspects are based around walking or driving through hub areas which are alright in scale. The story is setup with comic like cinematics and does tell its own unique tale which I appreciated. There’s the odd boss battle to take on and it does have some variation in what the missions are across unique environments. A brief tower defense segment for the tree fort also pops up a few times.

Gameplay

This is a hack and slash experience where each character has their own main attack style to them. There are unique extra ability usages to unleashed and you gather items as you eliminate foes. There is an alright variety of enemies and a wide range of distinct locations to visit that should be familiar to those of the show.

It’s got a neat animation style that is also an aesthetic match to the series, that I appreciated. I did come across a couple glitches here or there but for the most part it was just a nice, easy going time that was fun. It has the differing monsters, zombies and enemies you might expect to see in this type of take on the series as well.

The Conclusion

The Last Kids on Earth and the Staff of Doom is a decent take on the franchise offering some fun, easy going hack and slash action for the whole family. It really is quite friendly to all ages and I think it’s fairly accessible which is great. I had fun sitting there and going through it all. It was just the thing I needed at the time, not too demanding and relatively fun to play.

It may be simplistic, but just keep in mind the target audience for it. It is somewhat short, but you can enjoy some activities afterwards if you’d like. Oh, and I mention Fortnite since the world feels kind of like that in terms of style and what it is, but this is very much its own sort of universe.
