The Samsung Odyssey OLED G9 monitor is an insanely wide panel aimed at the gaming audience when it comes to high levels of performance. It’s incredibly immersive when you are playing a game and just wild if you are able to hit the high levels of fluidity that’s provided here. It allows for 240hz gaming which is up to 240fps in case you’re not sure about the terminology there.

The aspect ratio is 32:9 with a resolution of 5120x1440p. This allows for some really vast, and generally immersive viewing perspectives. Particularly if you amp up the field of view in games, you’ll really be able to see all around you which is rather interesting. It’s also a very fast display offering a 0.03ms response time so your reactions are swift. To do some extra lifting for your PC build this does have AMD FreeSync Premium Pro support as well.

Being an OLED this is a very vibrant panel with a DisplayHDR true Black 400 with HDR10+ Gaming being supported. As mentioned a few times this is very wide, with a 1800R curvature. So yes, this is a curved screen if that wasn’t totally obvious which means you can swiftly move things about it and have them wrap around you.

That is where when it comes to movie or video watching you might find it slightly awkward since you’ll have lots of black space. Though for multi-tasking you have so much play space. An aspect for the work side of things you may find slower since you have to drag further to perform some functions.

Connections wise you’re able to use the DisplayPort 1.4 to get your 240hz. It does have HDMI 2.1 support for 120hz which is ideal if you’re plugging in the a Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S or Playstation 5 into the monitor. It does indeed cover the angles and for the price point, it probably should. There’s the Micro HDMI 1 slot and a USB Hub 3 option for additional plugging in spots for media.

There’s also Wifi5 and Bluetooth 5.2 support being present for extra features and what not. If you’d like to talk to your monitor for whatever reason voice assistants are present including Bixby and Amazon Alexa. That of course does tie into SmartThings if you’re having that sort of setup present within your tech filled environment.

Another solid element of the monitor are the speakers. You get 5W x 2CH speakers built in with Adaptive Sound Pro. This is certainly loud enough and it will surround you with audio. I did however feel some of the audio tech could have been more impressive considering the price, but they certainly do suffice.

So in general the speaker audio quality was decent and worked well in games or general usage outside of gaming. Going back to the panel this does have a slight bezel around it but you’re unlikely to notice that much when gaming. It might show up a bit if you’re watching something darker however.

Another neat element is that this doesn’t really reflect too much which helps block out the world during dark scenarios. When it comes to the back of the monitor you do get this thing called CoreSync. This is essentially custom RGB lighting on the back. You can choose settings from random colors to synchronizing with what’s happening on the screen.

It’s a great, welcomed effect that I think can be quite pleasing and it was nice to see that paired with my Nanoleaf panels. The stand is heavy set, and very good for your cable management. The back area of the monitor itself actually nestles in cords very cleanly.

When it comes to the software elements of the screen you do get a whole Gaming Hub and Smart TV experience. So you get things such as Netflix as an app for watching video content or for gaming you have Xbox Cloud Gaming built in if you want to stream directly to the monitor without the need for a console.

It is a snappy interface, there’s picture in picture settings too if you’d like to go that route. There’s also a host of settings alongside more intensive game oriented ones for things such as monitoring the performance of games being played. It’s extensive and offers a lot of options essentially.

These are all aspects that can be enjoyed without plugging anything into the monitor, basically being its own Smart TV screen which is also somewhat basic these days I suppose. The remote for the monitor is fairly standard for a Samsung offering, it’s white and has a few buttons for quick media usage alongside that great little wheel.

The Conclusion

The Samsung Odyssey OLED G9 is an excellent gaming monitor delivering blazing fast 240hz action within an immersive curved screen. It really is just awesome to game on from Cyberpunk 2077 to Minecraft to Halo and more. When games take advantage of the ultra wide viewing angle it really does show and just offers a vast visual vantage.

It sounds good with its built in speakers and it performs in a snappy way if you’re using it for the Smart Hub features. I do slightly wish it was a bit taller if that makes sense, but it’s immersive regardless. The OLED panel is gorgeous, the back lighting is a nice tie in and it’s a monstrous screen.

It really does tower over an area and it should be a talking piece within the room environment that it’s set within. It comes stuffed with a variety of features and for the intense enthusiast you’ll get a lot out of this. Work wise I did fine it quite wide for moving aspects across it, but with picture in picture or other screen sorting options I’m sure others will find ways around that easily.

So in general it’s a very quality offering that paired nicely with my RTX 4090 and it was a joy to play around on for awhile. It’s neat to see such a powerful, intensive monitor become available and it’s ever so fluid to enjoy. It may be pricey, but if you can grab one you’ll likely be very pleased with what it has to offer.
